November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Starfish Family Services: Try Encouragement

On Monday, November 23, from 6:30-8:30 PM the highly trained staff from Starfish Family Services will present Try Encouragement. Participants will discuss the benefits of using encouragement with young children. Starfish staff will then introduce three exciting encouragement strategies to try in your daycare or home setting. Starfish will no longer be offering childcare for these events.

Michigan now has 1.2 million drivers 65 years old or older, and that number is growing. By 2025, one in five drivers is expected to be 65 or older. By using smart self-management techniques to review their driving skills, older drivers can keep driving longer while limiting risks to themselves and others.  Copies of Michigan's Guide for Aging Drivers and Their Families are available at the Canton Public Library and the Michigan Secretary of State office.

World Sight Day 2015

October 8 is World Sight Day, an annual day of awareness held to generate global attention on blindness and vision impairment.For those unfamiliar with the free service, the Braille and Talking Book Library offers audio books, magazines and braille titles to Michigan residents with visual or physical disabilities that are unable to utilize standard print materials. Canton Public Library is a demo site; interested individuals can try a digital talking book machine before enrolling in the program.

This week-long celebration features a variety of events in honor of Michigan's extensive trail network. Grab your friends and family, find a trail and let the adventure begin!

Library card holders can use their card online to print a free or discounted admission pass to almost 400 area museums, cultural organizations, state recreation areas, camp grounds and more.

The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia Screening on October 14

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. As many as 20 % of the student population in the U.S. are dyslexic. Dyslexia is a commonly misunderstood developmental reading disorder because it can be found in bright, highly intelligent, creative and innovative people. The HBO documentary film, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, follows four students on their journey as they face the challenges and cope with their diagnosis. Please join us on Wednesday, October 14, at 7:00 PM in the Community Room for a special screening of The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.

Oliver Sacks 1933-2015

Acclaimed neurologist and author, Oliver Sacks, passed away this morning at his Greenwich Village home in New York. He was 82. Diagnosed 9 years ago with ocular melanoma, he continued to be productive. The late actor, Robin Williams, portrayed him in the movie based on his book, Awakenings.

Savvy Seniors: 80 Years of Social Security Act

On August 14, 1935 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. In addition to the program we now think of as Social Security, it included unemployment insurance, old-age assistance, aid to dependent children and grants to the states to provide various forms of medical care.
